The global legal cannabis market is expected to reach USD150 billion by end of 2025. More and more countries worldwide permit access to regulated medical marijuana now. While much of this development has been concentrated in Europe and the US, several nations in Asia have also recently shifted towards greater tolerance. Thailand, Australia and New Zealand are the countries approved to legalize cannabis for medical use in Asia.
Salmonella, Aspergillus and STEC (Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli) contamination are of particular concern with regard to cannabis products. These bacteria can cause illnesses and infections to users and pose serious risk to those with compromised immune systems. Bio-Rad has established itself as a global leader in cannabis and food safety with a portfolio of microbial detection methods that have received accreditations from AOAC and AFNOR. These methods have been successfully adapted to screen cannabis for Salmonella, Aspergillus and STEC.
